Congratulations! You have recently been awarded a contract as a management consultant to an
organisation in the health field based in Victoria and have been brought in to provide high-level advice.
The organisation has been affected by an event that means it needs to make changes. You have been
asked to prepare a report that explains the nature of the event and its impacts on the organisation,
proposes a change management model to assist with the change management process, and suggests a
message to use in communicating the changes to the public. Your report will be tabled at an
‘extraordinary’ governance meeting of the organisation’s Board/Council in September.
The task
1. Choose an organisation of interest to you – perhaps one you wish to work for in future or you are
doing a placement in. It might be a government body, a Non-Government Organisation* or a private
business.
* Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are also known as Non-Profits and Not-for-Profits
2. Prepare a report that has four main sections.
Section A. What is the event?
Identify and describe the event that might affect the health organisation in a significant way. For
example:
?20% budget cut by state or federal government (other sources of funds are not affected)
?Significant change in the health needs of a population group it serves
?Sudden community demand for an existing service/program
?Demand by government to switch to using a personal digital record (‘e-record’) system
(where the client/patient retains their own health record)
?A corrupt act such as theft of thousands of dollars
?Detection and exposure of the abuse of/ harm to a client/patient or staff member
?Publication of a piece of industry research that names the organisation as failing to reduce
gender inequity, racism or other issues.
Section B. What aspects of the organisation will change, and why?
Describe the key features of the organisation before the event happened. Then explain which aspects of
the organisation would change or need to change because of the event, and why and how they would
change. Refer to at least 6 of the following:
Vision and Mission
Organisational structure
Organisational culture
Governance
Budget to run the organisation
Partnerships with other organisations
Programs and Services
Staff profile
Teams
Teamwork
Facilities
Quality management system
Public reputation
Reputation in the industry
Section C. Which change management model should be used to guide the change management process?
