Purpose: Each student will submit a written 800 word critical re?ection on undertaking an interview with a patient/person.

Students are expected to use Section A of the Health Assessment Workbook-Health Interview – section A of the Health Assessment Workbook to interview a patient/person of their choice.

You are required to gain consent from your interviewee prior to conducting the health interview. They need to be reassured that their identifying details will not be recorded in the interview notes and that their identity will remain anonymous.

Once the interview is completed in as much detail as possible for each question, students are required to re?ect on the use of their therapeutic communication skills during the interview; identify the factors that worked well and those that didn’t work well. It is important that you begin to appreciate that a re?ection is much more than simply a narration of what was done or not done. Realising that the value of re?ection is in identifying your strengths and weaknesses and improving your practice or knowledge. Describe, analyse, evaluate and to inform your learning. In this assessment you need to follow the Gibb’s re?ective cycle using the following headings;

1. Description. What happened? Give a concise, factual account (100 words).

2. Feelings. Outline and explore your thoughts and feelings at the time (100 words).

3. Evaluation. What worked well and what didn’t work in the situation? (100 words).

4. Analysis. Examine the experience in depth. Critical re?ection begins with reconstructing the experience beyond the personal, to also examine the historical and social factors that structure a situation. Start to theorise the causes and consequences of your actions. Use references such as research (recent studies are best), policy documents (from relevant bodies) or theory (from academic sources) to support your analysis. At this point you might try to identify an overarching issue, or key aspect of the experience that a?ected it profoundly for example, “communication” or
“time”.

5. Conclusion. Sum up the key things learned through the re?ective process, the main factors a?ecting the situation, and how the incident/event could have better incorporated appropriate legal and ethical considerations .

6. Action plan. A plan of action for the future is devised that would map alternative approaches should this or a similar situation arise in the future. What could you do di?erently next time to ensure the situation incorporates the legal and ethical considerations nurses must observe when working with vulnerable people/communities (200 words)?
