Assignment: Literature Analysis (Elements of a Short Story)

Choose one of the short stories you read in lesson/unit 1 (see Tutorials and/or Announcements section for a page by page reference guide on where stories can be located). Consider the elements of a short story you learned about in unit 1 (plot, climax, resolution, conflict, characterization, setting, mood), and write a 3-5 paragraph analysis of the story. An analysis encourages you to think about the author’s choices and the significance of these choices (how and why the work was written). Be sure to address specifically how these elements directly impact the overall meaning and theme of the short story. Please save as a Word(.doc) document and submit as an attachment below.

Midterm Exam 5 (Short Story Analysis) Outline

Introduction:

State the title and author of the story (from assigned course list)

Identify the theme of the story.

Identify 2 or 3 elements of story (plot, setting, characterization, climax, mood, etc) the author used to bring out that theme.

Body Paragraph 1:

Discuss the first element of story you identified in the introduction

Provide quotes and/or descriptions from the story to show this element in the story

Explain how these examples bring out the theme.

Body Paragraph 2:

Discuss the second element of story you identified in the introduction

Provide quotes and/or descriptions from the story to show this element in the story

Explain how these examples bring out the theme.

Conclusion

Do not provide any new information or analysis here.

Sum up your overall analysis of how the author conveyed the theme through the use of specific elements of story.
