Background Information

No, dear brothers and sisters, I am still not all I should be, but I am focusing all my energies on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us up to heaven.

Philippians 3:13-14, New Living Translation

As nurses in advanced roles, we continuously strive to improve our level of scholarship and be more effective practitioners, administrators, teachers and mentors. Many times our past “struggles” prevent us from seeing our potential and it can become a barrier to our growth. As we strive to become more like Christ, most of us have “past struggles” that form barriers to our growth. This scripture challenges us to forget the past that could drag us down and to look forward. I believe that each one of you is a dream in the heart of God – the challenge is to become that dream. Have you ever allowed the past to “bog you down” in your walk of God? Can you see the value of looking toward the future and the “prize” that lies ahead?
