Why do cases of sexual harassment and sexual assault continue to take place in the Army,

despite all the training and education that take place?

Sexual assault and harassment continue to affect many members of the army. Mainly,
these issues affect not only military women but also affect military men. The number of victims
of sexual harassment and sexual assault is higher in women than in men (Castro et al., 2015).
The main reason is that military women report cases of sexual harassment while a few men do.
However, cases of sexual harassment and assault could be more in men than in women. The
purpose of this paper is to explore why sexual harassment and assault occur in the army.
One root cause is the abuse of alcohol by men and women in the Army. The use of
alcohol is pervasive in the army, which increases many cases of sexual violence. Abuse of
alcohol in the military increases aggression, risk-taking, and sexual desires. Out of cases of
sexual harassment and assault in the Army, at least 58% are linked with the abuse of alcohol
(Castro et al., 2015). In their military training, Army men and women are trained to objectify
other people. The current practice does not reduce cases of sexual harassment. Mainly, some
males and females in the army misuse the objectification to develop a sense of entitlement,
which enhances sexual assault and harassment. Sexual harassment and assault in the Army can
be prevented through measures such as training, controlling the use of alcohol, treating
perpetrators as individual criminals under the law. Intervention measures can end sexual
harassment and assault if implemented in the army.
Overall, sexual assault and harassment continue to occur in the Army due to a sense of
entitlement, abuse of alcohol, and abuse of chain of command. Mainly, a hyper-masculine
perspective makes men develop attitudes and behaviors of sexual harassment. Many servicemen
and women claim that leadership military structure increases sexual assault. Primarily, sexual assault in the army affect victims because the commanding officer can interfere with the
investigation to set aside a conviction. However, sexual harassment and assault are not inevitable
and must end.
